You go out of your way to visit new-to-you breweries during your travels. You have at least one beer app on your smartphone to access beer ratings when you?re choosing what to drink. You use words and phrases like ?coriander,? ?citrus,? ?coffee,? ?chocolate,? and ?malty smooth? to describe the beer you?re drinking. You?re a beer connoisseur.

The next step in your love of all things beer is to learn how to brew your own. While creating excellent beer in your home does take some time and a definite attention to detail, it?s a process many people enjoy. These tips on how to brew your own beer will get you started.

1. Begin with a kit.

Experts agree that brewing a few batches from a kit will help you acquire the home-brewing gear you need as well as learn the process of home brewing in step-by-step, no-fail fashion. Visit a home-brewing shop?they are common in major cities?to purchase a kit and its requisite gear.

2. Home in on a particular style of beer.

Do you prefer pilsners, light ales, or something else? For your first few batches of beer, work with various kits that produce your favorite style. You?ll notice that the ingredients and preparation methods among kits for the same style of beer will deviate just a little and, as such, the beers they produce will also be a little different. By working with the same style of beer for a couple batches, you will learn crucial home-brewing nuances.

3. Maintain a sterile environment.

Many a batch of home-brewed beer has been spoiled via the unintentional use of gear that?s not perfectly sterilized. Most home brewers use either a bleach solution or iodophor (an iodine-based chemical) and a stringent washing standard to maintain a sterile environment.

4. Get feedback from your friends.

If you trust your friends for recommendations on where to get a good, unique pint, then you can also trust them to provide quality, honest feedback on your home brews. Everyone?s palette interprets food and drink a little differently, so getting a variety of opinions on your beer?s taste can help you better understand your creation.

5. Take a class.

When you?re ready to jump into brewing your own beer from scratch, take a class. These are typically arranged as a one-day event or one night a week for a few weeks. Classes are almost always taught by a passionate and skilled home brewer, and sometimes by someone who has turned their passion into a public microbrewery, so they are sure to be quality learning experiences.
