PopMech offers a video history of the automotive barrel roll

Astro Spiral Jump

Rob Dyrdek's "kick flip" stunt in a Chevrolet Sonic effectively sealed his place in the hallowed halls of stunt driver lore. As it turns out, actually pulling off a 360-degree barrel roll in a vehicle is one of the most challenging stunts one can perform. Driving on two wheels? Cakewalk. Knocking down a series of buses stacked on their ends? As easy as sucking pea soup through a crazy straw. The barrel roll requires stacks of mathematical calculations to account for everything from the vehicle's weight to its speed and the exact rotation angle of each ramp.

But Dyrdek wasn't the first guy to successfully execute such a bit of insanity. He's one of a select few stunt drivers to do the deed, and Popular Mechanics has taken a look at those who have tackled the automotive barrel roll in the past. Dyrdek's stunt was actually an almost exact replica of the Astro Spiral Jump as performed in 1972 at the Houston Astrodome. That exercise used a significantly classier AMC Javelin, however. Head over to Popular Mechanics to check out the video series and click past the jump for a clip on the Astro Spiral Jump.

Australian Baseball League Update

The Australian Baseball League resumed last night following an eight-day break for Christmas and the All-Star Game. The ABL plays a 45-game regular season schedule, beginning in early November and ending in late January. This is the first year the Rays have participated in the league, sending five players along with Princeton Rays Manager Mike Johns as a coach. Todd Glaesmann, Ty Morrison, Mark Thomas, Kevin Keiermaier and Johns are members of the Canberra Cavalry, while Darryl George is with the Melbourne Aces. Glaesmann and Morrison were scheduled to play in the first half of the season (11/4 - 12/20), followed by Thomas and Kiermaier primarily in the second half (12/29- 1/22). Some thoughts so far:Todd Glaesmann - The 21 year-old outfielder only played in 74 games last summer due to injury, so winter ball gives him a chance to make up for lost time. In 22 ABL games Glaesmann hit .310/.385/.476 over 84 at-bats. Seven of his 26 hits were for extra bases, including three home runs, and he stole seven bases in nine attempts. Strikeouts continued to be a concern, ending 20% of his ABL at-bats, but still an improvement over his 40% k-rate for Bowling Green in 2011.

Overall it was an excellent performance, culminating in him being named to the roster for the December 21st All-Star Game. Unfortunately he was unable to participate due to an injury a few days before game, described as either a broken hand or a fractured right wrist. According to Marc Topkin he will be healed in time for spring training.

Ty Morrison - Like Glaesmann, Morrison needed work in winter ball after playing in only 67 games for the Charlotte Stone Crabs in 2011. For Canberra he hit .245/.330/.363 in 102 at-bats with nine stolen bases. The 21 year-old outfielder struggled towards the end of his ABL stint, hitting only .176 (6-34) over his final eight games. Morrison replaced Glaesmann on the World Team roster for the All-Star Game, going 0-5 with an RBI.

Mark Thomas - The 23 year-old catcher didn't begin ABL play until December 16th after undergoing off-season surgery. In three games so far he's one for eleven with a double. After a full season of catching for Charlotte and then surgery, simply coming back healthy would a successful trip in my opinion.

Kevin Kiermaier - The third of the three 21 year-old outfielders the Rays sent to Australia, Kiermaier began play on December 15th. In five games he's gone three for 17 (.176) with two doubles, including 0-3 last night in the first game of the second half. He and Thomas are expected to play for Canberra for the rest of the ABL season, which ends January 22nd.

Darryl George - George is the youngest of the Rays Australian contingent at only 18 years old, and the only one not with Canberra, playing instead for the Melbourne Aces. He is also the only player in the Rays organization from Australia, born in Carlton in 1993.

After signing for a $100,000 bonus in May of 2010, George hit .243/.360/.284 with three doubles in 74 at-bats for the 2011 Gulf Coast League Rays in his professional debut. So far in the ABL the third baseman has a .230/.288/.295 line with four doubles in 61 at-bats over 23 games. Despite his youth, George's power upside is beginning to be a bit of a concern: in 135 at-bats between the GCL and ABL he has yet to hit a triple or a home run (he has seven doubles).

U.S. approves Monsanto drought-tolerant GM corn

WASHINGTON | Tue Dec 27, 2011 2:30pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Monsanto's genetically engineered, drought resistant corn is deregulated, the U.S. Agriculture Department said Thursday, clearing the variety for sale.

USDA approved the variety after reviewing environmental and risk assessments, public comments and research data from Monsanto.

Corn is the most widely grown U.S. crop and farmers grew 91.9 million acres of the feed grain this year, the second-largest area since World War Two.

In its 2009 petition for approval of its GM variety, Monsanto said 40 percent of crop losses in North America are due to sub-optimal moisture.

In a statement, Monsanto said it planned farm trials in the western U.S. Plains in 2012 to demonstrate the variety for growers and to generate data that will help guide Monsanto's commercial decisions.

"Our drought system is designed to help farmers mitigate the risk of yield loss when experiencing drought stress, primarily in areas of annual drought stress," said Hobart Beeghly, U.S. product management leader.

The drought-tolerant trait was part of a collaboration with the German chemical company BASF.

The major U.S. area for adoption of drought-tolerant corn would be the Plains, which produce one-quarter of the U.S. crop, Monsanto estimated, as well as similar dryland regions of Africa, Europe and Latin America.

USDA announced the variety, known as MON 87460, "is no longer considered a regulated article under our regulations governing the introduction of certain genetically engineered organisms."

Cheetah the chimp from 1930s Tarzan flicks dies (AP)

PALM HARBOR, Fla. ? A Florida animal sanctuary says Cheetah the chimpanzee sidekick in the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s has died at age 80.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor announced that Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb on Wednesday told The Tampa Tribune ( http://bit.ly/rRuTeJ) that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She says he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.

Based on the works of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Tarzan stories, which have spawned scores of books and films over the years, chronicle the adventures of a man who was raised by apes in Africa.

Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan films that starred American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller. Cobb says Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960.

Cobb says Cheetah wasn't a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest says that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would throw feces.

Heineken makes room for Dos Equis

By Bloomberg News

The producer of Heineken beer is only too happy to make room on U.S. store shelves for an upstart Mexican brand.

Heineken NV's flagship beer has lost U.S. market share to the likes of Belgium's Stella Artois over the past five years, according to Euromonitor International data. Now it's getting a boost in its fight against the competition with its fast-growing Mexican beer brand, Dos Equis, which Heineken acquired in 2010.

Dos Equis is "our shining star" in the U.S., John Nicolson, the head of the company's Americas unit, said in an interview.

Heineken, the ubiquitous Dutch beer sold in the U.S. since 1933, has been attempting to regain lost ground with a new global marketing campaign, and by pushing its brand more aggressively in bars and restaurants.

The Americas, including the U.S. and Brazil, is Heineken's second-biggest market after Western Europe, accounting for 23 percent of the brewer's $10.9 billion first-half sales.

Dos Equis is on a tear. Sales of the brand, named for the two Xs on its label, soared 17 percent in the quarter through October, compared with Heineken's 1 percent sales decline and industrywide declines of about 2 percent, according to research by Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Trevor Stirling.

At the core of Dos Equis's success is a highly effective marketing push, Nicolson said, including its "Most Interesting Man in the World" ad campaign, featuring the tales of one worldly man's experiences ? and the catchphrase "I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis."

U.S. urges dialogue over Iraqi crisis (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? Vice President Joe Biden spoke by telephone on Sunday with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki about violence in Baghdad and a political crisis that has erupted in the week since the last American troops left Iraq.

U.S. officials, diplomats and Iraqi politicians have been in a flurry of talks to calm a crisis that threatens to push Iraq back in the kind of sectarian strife that took the OPEC oil producer to the edge of civil war only a few years ago.

Just a week after the last U.S. troops left, the upheaval risks scuppering an uneasy power-sharing government that splits posts among the Shi'ite National Alliance coalition, the mostly Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc and Kurdish political movement.

Iraqi lawmakers and politicians tried on Sunday to negotiate an end to the turmoil days after Maliki, who is a Shi'ite, sought his Sunni vice president's arrest on charges he ran an assassination squad, and tried to fire his own Sunni deputy.

Biden, who also spoke to Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government President Massoud Barzani, has played a diplomatic role during the U.S. military's departure, travelling to Iraq and discussing the signs of rising sectarian tension with Iraqi leaders.

"The Vice President offered condolences on the recent violence in Baghdad, exchanged views with both leaders on the current political climate in Iraq and reiterated our support for ongoing efforts to convene a dialogue among Iraqi political leaders," the White House said in a statement.

A string of bombings across Baghdad, including a suicide attack on a government building, killed 72 and wounded 200 on Thursday, underscoring Iraq's still vulnerable security situation as the political crisis gripped the country.

Tuesday could be a key test for how Iraq's turmoil develops when the cabinet is scheduled to meet and Iraqiya government ministers will decide whether to attend or boycott the meeting. Iraqiya lawmakers have already temporarily suspended their participation in parliament, which is in recess.

"There was a delegation from the National Alliance that met Iraqiya last night," said Haider al-Abadi, a senior Shi'ite lawmaker and Maliki ally.

"If Iraqiya wants to participate in real talks, it has to go back to parliament and the government because a parliament boycott is not acceptable," he added.

Nearly nine years after the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, sectarian tensions still run close to the surface in Iraq, where sustained violence between Sunni and Shi'ite communities killed thousands of people in 2006-07.

Maliki last week sought the arrest of Sunni Vice-President Tareq al-Hashemi, a key member of Iraqiya, on charges he ordered his bodyguards to carry out assassinations and bombings.

The prime minister also asked parliament to fire his Sunni deputy, Saleh al-Mutlaq, another Iraqiya leader, after he branded Maliki a dictator.

PROTESTS IN PROVINCES

Hashemi, who denies the charges and says he is victim of a political vendetta, is now in Iraqi Kurdistan, where he is unlikely to face immediate arrest. He has asked for his case to be transferred there. Semi-autonomous Kurdistan has its own government and armed forces.

"The political dimension of this is to get rid of all those who oppose Nuri al-Maliki, it is clear," Hashemi told Reuters in a weekend interview.

Shi'ite political leaders say the Hashemi case is a criminal issue now with the courts and is not politically motivated.

But Maliki's moves are fanning minority Sunni fears that they are being marginalized. Since Saddam's fall, Iraq's Shi'ite majority has risen and Sunnis say they feel they have been pushed out of decision-making.

Iraq remains a sharply divided country with Kurds having their own northern enclave, Shi'ites mainly in the southern oil-producing region, and Sunni strongholds sitting in the west along the frontier with Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

Iraqis in four cities in Sunni heartland provinces protested on Friday against the Hashemi arrest warrant and against what they see as Maliki's attempts to consolidate power at the expense of the Sunni minority.

Elsewhere at the weekend, Iraqis demonstrated against Hashemi in the southern, mainly Shi'ite city of Hilla, and urged Maliki's government to bring him to justice.

Upheaval in Iraq risks wider fallout in a region where a crisis in neighboring Syria is turning increasingly sectarian, and where Shi'ite Iran, Turkey and Sunni Arab Gulf states are vying for influence.

Rape-allegation suit against Brown U. is dismissed (AP)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? A man who claimed Brown University kicked him out and failed to notify authorities when the daughter of a major donor falsely accused him of rape reached an agreement Wednesday with the woman's family, resulting in the dismissal of his federal lawsuit against the Ivy League college.

The agreement was reached in U.S. District Court in Providence by William R. McCormick III, 24, and his parents; his accuser and her father; and Brown.

Attorneys for McCormick and his accuser released a statement saying they "have resolved all of the disputes between them ... to their mutual satisfaction." They declined to comment further.

The agreement says McCormick and his parents are barred from suing again.

Brown spokeswoman Marisa Quinn says the school is not a part of the settlement and did not participate in negotiations. She said that she did not know the details of the agreement but that Brown acted appropriately.

Michael Burch, a former assistant wrestling coach at Brown who was assigned to represent McCormick during the university disciplinary process when he was accused in 2006, said the outcome was a victory for McCormick.

"I'm proud and I'm happy for him that he fought so long against these influences and forces," Burch said. He criticized Brown, which he said has not learned from this situation.

"Brown will always put its image and money first," Burch said.

The McCormicks sued in 2009 after, they say, university administrators gave William McCormick III a one-way plane ticket home to Wisconsin when he was accused of rape in autumn 2006.

The student accused McCormick of stalking and harassing her when they were freshmen that September. He says he was abruptly removed from campus after the student later accused him of raping her in her dorm room while she was trying to study.

McCormick alleged the school accepted the rape allegations as true without doing an investigation. Brown didn't refer the matter to police and instead handled it internally, the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit says the father of the accuser is a Brown alumnus who has "donated and raised very substantial sums of money." It says he was in regular contact about the allegations with administrators and contacted university President Ruth Simmons directly.

McCormick has maintained he did nothing wrong but agreed to withdraw from the school after a confidential agreement with the accuser's family. The lawsuit says he signed the contract under duress.

Under that agreement, the accuser agreed not to press charges or take other legal action against McCormick. The woman graduated from Brown in 2010.

McCormick, a champion high school wrestler from Waukesha, Wis., was at Brown on a full scholarship. After leaving the school, he enrolled at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., where he graduated in the spring.

The Associated Press generally does not identify people who say they were sexually assaulted, and is not naming the father to avoid identifying the woman.

The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, December 23, 2011.

Wet weather will move into the Northeast on Friday, as a low pressure system moves northward from the Southeast. The system that brought heavy rain, severe thunderstorms, and strong winds to the Lower Mississippi River Valley on Thursday will continue moving northeastward and into the Northeast. This system will produce a front that extends down the East Coast. Warmer temperatures to the south will support rain showers across the Mid-Atlantic states, while rain showers will turn to snow showers in the far Northeast and New England states. Higher elevations of the Northern and Central Appalachians will also see snow showers. This extremely fast moving system will move off the East Coast by mid-day, pulling scattered rain and snow showers eastward into the Atlantic Ocean.

Behind this system, high pressure continues building in the Plains and stretches eastward over the Mississippi River Valley into the Eastern US. This will push cols and dry air in from Canada, allowing for sunny and cool conditions to persist across the Central US.

In the West, a low pressure system over the Rocky Mountains weakens as it continues dipping southward and further into the Southeast. Expect a few more inches of snow across higher elevations of New Mexico, with light rain at lower levels. The rest of the Western half of the nation remains sunny and cool as high pressure dominates. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday have ranged from a morning low of -20 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont. to a high of 84 degrees at Fort Myers, Fla.

McConnell To Boehner: Stop Blocking The ... - Business Insider

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has just offered a way out for House Republicans, who are badly losing the public relations war over the payroll tax cut.

He's calling on Speaker of the House John Boehner to give in and pass a bill to extend the payroll tax cut ? implicitly the bill that passed the Senate by an 89-10 margin on Saturday.

As a compromise, he also calls on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to appoint negotiators on a year-long extension of the payroll tax cut ? which Reid has already pledged to do once the House passed a short-term extension.

This is the first time McConnell has publicly broken with Boehner on the issue ? and is a reflection of growing discontent among Senate Republicans, that Boehner's opposition was undermining the GOP.

Here is his statement:

?House Republicans sensibly want greater certainty about the duration of these provisions, while Senate Democrats want more time to negotiate the terms. These goals are not mutually exclusive. We can and should do both.?Working Americans have suffered enough from the President?s failed economic policies and shouldn?t face the uncertainty of a New Year?s Day tax hike.?

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell issued the following statement Thursday regarding a path forward on Keystone XL Pipeline jobs, extending unemployment insurance, the temporary payroll tax holiday and seniors? access to medical care:

?The House and Senate have both passed bipartisan bills to require the President to quickly make a decision on whether to support thousands of U.S. manufacturing jobs through the Keystone XL pipeline, and to extend unemployment insurance, the temporary payroll tax cut and seniors? access to medical care. There is no reason why Congress and the President cannot accomplish all of these things before the end of the year.? House Republicans sensibly want greater certainty about the duration of these provisions, while Senate Democrats want more time to negotiate the terms. These goals are not mutually exclusive. We can and should do both. Working Americans have suffered enough from the President?s failed economic policies and shouldn?t face the uncertainty of a New Year?s Day tax hike. Leader Reid should appoint conferees on the long-term bill and the House should pass an extension that locks in the thousands of Keystone XL pipeline jobs, prevents any disruption in the payroll tax holiday?or other expiring provisions, and allows Congress to work on a solution for the longer extensions.?

Andrew Jenks Has A Burning Question For Newt Gingrich

Star of MTV's 'World of Jenks' relives his political baptism as he sets out on the campaign trail with GOP hopefuls for 'Power Of 12.'
By Andrew Jenks

Andrew Jenks speaks with young voters in "Power Of 12: Our Voice"
Photo: MTV News

As the namesake for MTV's doc-style series "World of Jenks", I've landed in some pretty surprising places and met more than a few interesting characters. But I never thought the first time I shook hands with a presidential candidate would be while he signed copies of a children's book. Yet there I was at a Hilton Garden in Staten Island, where a group of mostly older book-buyers fiddled with their Sharpies in anticipation of GOP hopeful Newt Gingrich.

While the former House Speaker began scribbling his signature on copies of his books as well as "Sweet Land of Liberty" — written by wife Callista and featuring a cover illustration of the main character, Ellis the Elephant — I came to a sudden realization: There, at the Staten Island Tea Party Town Hall, I'd entered the world of politics. And On Tuesday, I made it official, helping MTV kick off the Power of 12, 11 months worth of election-year coverage, with the documentary short "Our Voice."

To be fair, though, I had always been a political junkie. I turn on the TV and go straight for the cable news stations. I DVR my favorite political morning show and watch it at night before scanning the nightly news programs ... it's gross.

But there I was at a Gingrich political press conference (also part of the Town Hall event) at the Hilton. CNN, ABC and other bigwig networks that I've watched on a daily basis were gathered to my left. I felt like too much of an outsider to be standing in the middle of the pack of aggressive-looking news types — pens out, adjusting their hair and their camera lenses. As I held onto my MTV microphone, the other reporters eyed me as if I had checked into the wrong event.

My friend and producer Monty, who had been to many of these political events, turned to me and asked, 'OK, Newt points at you — Go! What's your question?' Occasionally, Jonah, my lifelong friend and [director of photography], expressed concern about our audio levels.

Finally Gingrich walked in, though, and you could hear a pin drop. I've spoken with homeless people, convicted murderers, even people on their death beds, but this was different. I'd never seen a hush come over a room like that. A potential future president had just walked into an awkwardly named first-floor conference room (the Cherry Willow Suite?).

'SPEAKER!' 'MR. SPEAKER!' they started shouting, each one louder than the next.

I found myself acting out a real-life episode of "The West Wing" and soon, I was yelling just like everyone else, trying to get my question in. It didn't take long for it to click that this was how you played the game: being aggressive, sneaking into factories for a press conference, lingering around a car you suspect might be there to pick up a candidate, waiting three hours just to catch a politician walking down the hallway to use the bathroom. ... I can't imagine it had ever been that loud in the Cherry Willow Suite.

Suddenly, Monty gave me a puzzled look, "What was that?"

Next Question!

On the second go-around, I decided I was going for it. "Speaker! Mr. Speaker!"

My voice was being drowned out, and after it happened again for the third time, I took a deep breath.

Next Question!

So I shouted a combination of words that probably made little sense: "Jenks! MTV News! I'm traveling! The country! Everywhere and need to know!"

In what seemed like slow motion, Newt turned his head and looked right at me ... suddenly, everyone was looking at me, dead silent. I'm the only guy wearing a T-shirt, but the floor is mine.

World debates price of peace in Afghanistan

World leaders were meeting in Germany Monday in the hope of creating a "peaceful Afghanistan that will never again become a safe haven for international terrorism," according to German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.

But, according to a report by the news service Bloomberg, this could mean a commitment to the country lasting nearly 20 years.

The conference in Bonn is focused on the transfer of security responsibilities, long-term prospects for international aid and, ten years after U.S.-backed forces toppled the Taliban, a possible political settlement with the insurgent group.?

Afghanistan is planning to ask the world for economic aid to last until 2025 and for help paying for the country's security forces until 2030, Bloomberg said.

It added that the World Bank has estimated that Afghanistan will need about $70 billion over the next 10 years and that unless the country's budget gap was met "the good work of the past ten years will come undone."

"I'm hopeful but dubious," Robert Hathaway, director of the Asia Program at the Wilson Center in Washington, told Bloomberg about Afghanistan's future prospects. "Even if Pakistan were fully participating, I think the idea of a regional cooperation toward a settlement is going to be very difficult."

Afghanistan's neighbor Pakistan is a central player in regional efforts to improve trade and strengthen historically weak economies in what is a strategically important part of the world. But its boycott has cast a pall over the session, because it points out that nation's influence in Afghanistan and its ability to play the spoiler.

U.S.-Pakistan relations, a new 'all-time low'?

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton pledged ongoing support for Afghanistan, telling the conference that "the United States is prepared to stand with the Afghan people for the long haul.

The international community has "much to lose if the country again becomes a source of terrorism and instability," she added.
In addition to a financial cost, there were fears that achieving peace in the war-torn country could come at the cost of human rights.
Leading activist Selay Ghaffar told The Guardian newspaper that she is worried that improvements in women's rights could be short-lived if the international community goes into closed-door peace talks with insurgent groups such as the Taliban and Afghan President Hamid Karzai's government.

"The biggest fear we have right now is reconcilliation with the Taliban," Ghaffar told the U.K. paper. "Will women play a role in these discussions? Will women's rights be part of the negotiations?"

The lack of progress toward a political settlement with the Taliban is a major disappointment for the United States, which sees a deal as the key to ending the war. But the prospect of some accommodation with the hardline movement that once forbade Afghan girls to go to school is a bitter pill for many of the leaders Clinton addressed Monday.

"Reconciliation holds promise, but it cannot be at the cost of the gains you have suffered for," Clinton said.
