At an international conference of the 'Friends of Syria' group of nations, up to 70 delegates gathered to try to find a way to end the bloodshed in Syria.
The world leaders called on President Bashar al Assad to stop the killing of civilians and allow emergency aid into the country.
But the international efforts to resolve the crisis were criticised by Qatar and Saudi Arabia, who want Arab peacekeepers to enter Syria in order to enforce a ceasefire.
Western powers, including Britain and the US, favour a diplomatic approach to put more pressure on the Assad regime, including more economic sanctions.
As the concern over the humanitarian crisis grows, the Red Cross confirmed they, along with the Syrian Red Crescent, had been allowed into the besieged Syrian city of Homs to evacuate several wounded people.
Homs has been under constant bombardment by government forces for three weeks and hundreds of civilians are reported to have been killed.
On Friday aid workers entered the Babr Amr district to help those in need of medical assistance and managed to safely move seven people to a hospital in another part of the city.
It came as Mrs Clinton used strong language to denounce Russia and China for their attitudes toward the crisis in Syria.
The two nations were not in attendance at the Friends of Syria meeting in Tunisia, and earlier this month both voted against a UN resolution condemning the violence.
Speaking after the conference, Mrs Clinton said: "It's quite distressing to see two permanent members of the Security Council using their veto while people are being murdered - women, children, brave young men - houses are being destroyed.
"It is just despicable and I ask whose side are they on? They are clearly not on the side of the Syrian people."
While Moscow has backed calls for a ceasefire, it has criticised other Western countries for being "one-sided" in its approach.
However, there does appear to be evidence of disagreement over what exactly should be done to stop the killing of Syria's civilians.
Qatar and Saudi Arabia used the Tunis conference to called for an Arab force to impose peace.
Mrs Clinton used her speech to delegates to demand urgent humanitarian aid be allowed into Syria, adding that if the Assad regime did not co-operate, it would have "even more blood on its hands".
Directing her comments at Mr Assad, Mrs Clinton said: "You will pay a heavy cost for ignoring the will of the international community and violating the human rights of your people."
She also called on all nations to block Syrian assets, boycott oil from the country and consider closing embassies and consulates.
She added: "For nations that have already imposed sanctions, we must vigorously enforce them."
But later in the day the Saudi delegation quit the talks over what they called a lack of action, while the Saudi foreign minister even suggested that arming Syria's opposition fighters was an "excellent idea".
As Foreign Secretary William Hague arrived for the talks, he said it was important for Russia and China to no longer oppose the international community - and even suggested Beijing was reviewing its stance.
"I haven't seen that shift in Russia yet," he said. "I think the Chinese government is constantly assessing the position.
"So I hope... immediately they will change their position, but if not that, then they will steadily do so over time."
Mr Hague also said Britain would recognise the Syrian opposition as a "legitimate representative" of the people, and called the government "a criminal regime".
"We will intensify our links with the opposition. We, in common with other nations, will now treat them and recognise them as a legitimate representative of the Syrian people."
Also at the conference, France's foreign minister announced that the European Union would freeze the assets of Syria's central bank next week.
Alain Juppe told delegates the EU was planning on implementing the "strong new measures" in its meeting on Monday.
It is believed more than 7,000 people have now died in the uprisings against President Assad.
The draft conclusion of the meeting demanded that the Syrian authorities facilitate the delivery of emergency aid to areas under siege - including Homs, Deraa and Zabadani.
But the Syrian regime has refused to comply with such calls so far.
Hosting the summit, Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki told Sky News the world can no longer stand by and "watch the massacre" in Syria.
But the Tunisian leader ruled out a military solution, warning that foreign military intervention or arming the opposition could only lead to an escalation of violence.

Defense: Ga. suspect says angel told him to kill
DECATUR, Ga. (AP) ? A Georgia man gunned down his co-worker's husband outside a suburban Atlanta preschool because the murder suspect believed an angel had ordered him to pull the trigger, his defense attorney argued on Tuesday.
Defense attorney Doug Peters said Hemy Neuman fell so hopelessly in love with Andrea Sneiderman, whom he supervised at General Electric, that he believed he was the father of her two children and that the only way to protect them was to kill Russell Sneiderman in November 2010. Neuman faces murder and firearms charges.
"He thought Sophia and Ian were his children and that Rusty Sneiderman was a danger to them," said Peters, adding that his client was not guilty by reason of insanity because he couldn't tell the difference between right and wrong during the killing.
Prosecutors, though, urged the jurors to reject the claims of delusions by Neuman, who they said will also assert that the angel resembled Olivia Newton-John and the demon who came to him sounded like Barry White. He said Neuman meticulously planned the killing for months so he could be with Andrea Sneiderman
"I'll boil it down to a sentence: A man wanted someone else's wife so he killed her husband," said Don Geary, one of the prosecutors. "He got caught. We ask you to return a verdict that speaks the truth."
Russell Sneiderman was shot to death shortly after dropping his two-year-old son off at a day care center in Dunwoody, an affluent suburb north of Atlanta. A bearded man in a hoodie approached Sneiderman, fired several shots and then hopped into a silver minivan and sped away. It happened so quickly that police initially believed it could have been a professional job.
At the center of the trial is Andrea Sneiderman, who is likely to be called to testify on Tuesday. Peters said the two shared a string of "intimate relations" during business trips after he hired her in early 2010, but that she rebuffed his attempts to marry her. Prosecutors say she rejects the allegations and that Neuman could be hallucinating.
Neuman, 48, wasn't interviewed by police until six weeks after Sneiderman's death after detectives discovered that shortly before the shooting he rented a minivan matching the description of a vehicle seen driving away from the crime scene. He faces life in prison without parole if convicted; he'd be turned over to the state mental health system if found not guilty.
Neuman had a troubled childhood and was constantly in fear of his father, a Holocaust survivor who was wracked with guilt for having survived the Auschwitz death camp while 11 other relatives died. He eventually moved from his home in Mexico to a boarding school in Israel, partly to get away from his father's volatile behavior.
"It was a life of anger, it was a life filled with terror, of not knowing when or why their father would explode with rage," Peters said.
He later graduated from Georgia Tech and bought a pricey home in a Cobb County subdivision after landing a job as a high-ranking manager at GE, where he made $180,000 a year and supervised 5,000 engineers and a $800 million budget, prosecutors said.
Neuman hired Andrea Sneiderman in early 2010 after she decided she needed to earn more money because her husband, a 36-year-old Harvard-trained entrepreneur, was having trouble finding steady work, attorneys said. They soon hit it off, and on work trips they would share long dinners, wine and occasionally romance, Neuman's defense team contends.
Prosecutors say Neuman began meticulously planning Russell Sneiderman's killing after she rebuffed one of his advances. They say he bought a gun, took it to target practice and then on Nov. 10 camped outside Sneiderman's house to try to kill him. He bolted when Sneiderman, who couldn't recognize Neuman, startled him, they say.
Nine days later, prosecutors say, Neuman arrived at his office earlier than usual ? at 5:36 a.m. ? and then sneaked out a back door to avoid security cameras and give himself an alibi. He then drove to the Dunwoody Prep day care center, shot Sneiderman four times and hopped in the minivan and tried to melt into morning rush traffic, they say.
Neuman was so callous about his actions that he returned to work a few hours later and later participated in the religious ceremonies of his victim's death, including the Jewish ritual of shoveling dirt on Sneiderman's grave at his funeral, Geary said.
Peters asked the jurors to pay careful attention to phone records between Neuman and Andrea Sneiderman, noting that the two exchanged three calls on the night before the shooting and that she called him six times in the hours after her husband was killed.
He also said his arguments that his client couldn't tell the difference between right and wrong during the killing are backed by evaluations from psychiatrists and mental health experts who diagnosed Neuman as bipolar and concluded he had a delusional disorder.
"This case is not about what happened. We know what happened," Peters said. "It's about why."

These days it?s strange to hear people say, ?I?m just not computer literate,? as computers have evolved from archaic scientific calculators to simple point-and-click type machines. We suspect that today?s ?computer illiterates? are people who haven?t taken the time to experiment with such a machine. And we strongly believe that spending just twenty minutes with one could turn the most adamant technological caveman into any one of those who have fun wreaking chatroom havoc on the Internet today.
Today, one only needs to learn how to manipulate a mouse, punch a few buttons on a keyboard, or really just turn the thing on to use a computer. It?s hard for some folks to believe, but the computers of this generation almost run themselves! For fun, let?s investigate just how little knowledge these thousand-dollar machines actually require.
Can an absolute newbie operate a computer without knowing how to use a mouse or keyboard? Assuming that a computer is set up to operate on voice command ? sure! Voice command software allows users to tell a computer what to do and the computer responds by fulfilling the user?s commands. Although it?s pretty new and still under development, voice directed technology has already infiltrated consumer service related systems.
Think back to the last time that you paid a bill over the phone. Instead of speaking to a human being, chances are that you spoke to a computer that not only responded to what you said and followed the commands that you gave it, it also asked you for more information such as your full name or credit card number. In this case, a person (such as yourself) operated a computer without even knowing it!
Can an absolute newbie sit down at a computer without knowing how to use one? Assuming that a computer is set up to operate on touch command ? the answer is again, yes! Touch command software allows users to literally touch objects on a monitor and tell the computer what to do with a finger. Known as ?kiosks,? these programs are already in use world wide at ATM machines, employment centers, and in health monitoring systems.
Neither a mouse nor a keyboard is required. A computer user only needs to touch various boxes on a screen to control a computer. Sure, the programming behind such technology is extensive and advanced, but to the end user, it makes computer use less intimidating and plain easy.
Of course when we talk about operating a computer, we envision more involvement than speaking on the phone or touching things on a screen. The above illustrations were just a couple of examples of how far computer technology has grown, and how far we?ve pushed ?user-friendliness? to its limit. Eventually, the keyboard and mouse will have to play a role when computer newbies have to work with one as a cash register, as a hotel booking program, or as a library?s catalog system.
These requirements don?t make computers any less easier to operate, but they don?t make them that much harder either. So much of today?s software is designed to accommodate the experience of a new user that anyone could get connected to the Internet, send an email message, and download an MP3 file within the first five hours of purchasing a personal PC.

Internet Marketing Step By Step - How To Create Your First Product ...
One of the biggest obstacles to many people who want to start their own online business is creating their first product. It can be a huge stumbling block. So in this post in my step by step series on internet marketing I?m going to give some guidance on how you can create your first product.
The first obstacle you need to overcome is the psychological one. These are some phrases I?ve heard ?I?ve never written anything in my life?, ?Why would people want to buy a product from me?? and ?I don?t know enough to create a product?
Let me make something clear straight away ? I know lots of people who are successful in online business who said very similar things before they started out! It?s a very common experience ? so accept it and move on. The truth is that there?s only one way to find out if you can create a product that people will buy and that?s to do it!
The next obstacle is deciding what type of product to create. There are lots of possibilities ? ranging from digital products e.g. writing an e-book or recording an audio interview to physical products e.g. a book, CD or tool.
One of the simplest ways to start an online business is to create a digital product that people can download onto their computers. This gets rid of the need to store or ship physical products. So it reduces the complexity of the process and helps you get started.
We?ll therefore work on creating an e-book as your first product. There are 2 main ways that you can approach this ? you can either write it yourself or pay someone else to do it for you. Either way you?ll need to think about what material you want to cover in the e-book.
For example, if you?re targeting beginners in your niche you can put yourself in their shoes and have a chapter on each area / topic that they?ll be interested in. Then come up with some bullet points listing the material that you want to cover in each chapter. Some useful areas to cover are basic facts, common problems or frequently asked questions.
You can then either set about fleshing out these points yourself or providing the outline to someone else who will write the e-book for you. Check out my blog post on outsourcing for more information on this.
Remember that you?re not creating ?War and Peace?! For your first e-book aim for a reasonable number of pages ? by setting yourself a realistic target you?re much more likely to achieve it.
A third obstacle that people face is the ?perfectionist? one. They want to make sure that everything is absolutely perfect before they start selling it. Now I?m a great believer in doing everything to the best of your ability but the reality is that perfection eludes most of us!
So you?ll need to discipline yourself to decide when you?ve done sufficient work on your e-book and to stop tinkering with it. Full stop! You?ll then have achieved your objective of creating your first product. That will be a great feeling and a cause for celebration.
You may well be pleasantly surprised as to how straightforward it can be when you set your mind to it, break the task down into manageable chunks and then get on with it. 'Colbert Report' to return Monday after absence (omg!)
NEW YORK (AP) ? A representative for Stephen Colbert says "The Colbert Report" will return Monday after a sudden break due to the ailing health of the star's mother.
The Comedy Central show last week substituted repeats for scheduled shows on Wednesday and Thursday. At the time, the network said only that the cancellations were because of "unforeseen circumstances."
Colbert is expected to address his absence on Monday. His 91-year-old mother, Lorna Colbert, is ill.
Earlier on Twitter, Colbert thanked those who had offered "thoughts and prayers."
Colbert's father, James Colbert, and two of his brothers were killed in an airplane crash in 1974.

When hosting brainstorming sessions, gather where employees can relax in lower-pressure surroundings.

Reed Grimm Makes Like Casey Abrams on American Idol
Up until last night, Reed Grimm appeared to be one of the most confident American Idol contestants in recent memory. The guy initially auditioned with the Family Matters theme song, after all.
But the season 11 contestant - who grew up on stage, singing alongside his family - showed some panic in Hollywood, as he was told shortly before it was time to perform that he could not sing a capella as he had planned. He had to include the band.
Cue a call to Reed's mother and concern over whether or not he even belonged on the competition... and then cue what we believe to be an Idol first. For the past few decades in the US, reproductive health policies have taken up a large proportion of the nation?s political conversation and have since intensified during the run for the Republican presidential nomination. If the debate is not about abortion, it is about the availability of contraception and the morning after pill, issues that have recently gone hand in hand. Admittedly they encapsulate broadly different arguments, including widely different moral issues, but both orientate around the issue of women?s reproductive health and rights. The contraception debate has extended from governmental intrusion into the private sphere into a moral debate, with conservative representative Jim Jordan calling contraception ?abortion-inducing drugs.??The compromise President Obama announced on Friday (10/02/2012) showed how the requirement of religious institutions to provide free contraceptives was withdrawn on religious moral objections (see videos in this article). Catholic bishops refuse to compromise?even though religious institutions would not be required to directly pay for contraception for their employees with insurance companies taking over that responsibility instead. The bishops are aiming to dismantle the new legislation so no institutions or employers would have to cover contraception if they had religious objections. The debate is so polarised it has been called both the ?war on women?s health care??and the ?war on religion?. It even led Al Jazeera to ask in a tweet recently if US politics is endangering women?s health.
Certainly, a lot of this makes for entertaining politics in the name of buzzwords and sensationalism, especially during the Republican race to the presidential nomination. But behind the phrase ?freedom of religion? lies another issue: the way in which religious rhetoric is actively being used to continue oppressing women?s sexuality and freedom to choose.
While the Republican presidential hopefuls and religious leaders, in particular the Catholic church, continues to claim that Obama is violating the freedom of religion by forcing religious employers and institutions to provide contraception as part of health insurance, polls keep producing results to the contrary. It becomes apparent that the majority of self-identified Catholics agree with free and accessible contraception, even when Catholic institutions would have to provide them, and what is more, 98% of self-identified Catholic women use contraception themselves. A more recent poll by Fox News released on Friday shows an even larger percentage being favourable to universal access to contraception. The worries about immorality and the outrage therefore seems to lie mainly with a handful of white men who are running for the presidential nomination or are in political positions and therefore have something to gain from the sensationalism. Mitt Romney has called Obama?s plan an ?assault on religion? and ?a real blow? to our friends of the Catholic faith.??Presumably he means the friends who are part of the clergy of the Catholic Church and are as such not sexually active, and not the Catholic friends mentioned above who overwhelmingly agree with the plan. (This is the same Mitt Romney whose state?s health-insurance law expanded access to contraception ? see above link.) One may therefore ask how many of those arguing against wider access to contraception knows about the importance of it for women?s ability for self-determination and sexual health. Whether the arguments are being made on moral grounds or anti-infringement grounds ? and the anti-infringement argument certainly seems to be used to defend the moral argument ? there is little doubt it will affect women who are Catholic and non-Catholic, religious and non-religious, who are employed by any of these institutions seeking exemption.
But this post is not an advocacy post for universal contraception to women (fellow LSE MSc Gender, Development and Globalisation student Daniela Ramirez already made a really good case for it here; it is about what effects religious rhetoric has on women?s right to self-determination.
Since its founding and continuing appropriation of land, the US has a tradition of tolerance for religious heterogeneity, even those that were frowned upon across the Atlantic, that tradition runs strong today ? although not without problem. It is one of the great things about the country and runs hand-in-hand with a strong belief in the freedom of expression. But what happens when freedom of religion and freedom of expression are used to restrict others? choices?
The debate in the US around contraception and abortion does not only affect religious people. The pro-life lobby, as they call themselves, some of which are also part of the anti-contraception lobby, is not looking for a choice that allows religious people who disagree with the use of contraception to pass on using these services, because no one is forced to use them. There are no federally forced abortions, mandatory use of contraception or restrictions on practicing your religion. That is not the issue. The issue is that some people are trying to force their religiously derived opinions on others. And it is mainly those few mentioned previously, who have the access to media and power, who are trying to prevent women from accessing health care, contraception and abortion services, all in the name of ?religious beliefs and moral convictions.??Whose religious beliefs and moral convictions? In a day and place where it is fully possible to be a practicing religious person and still believe that women have the ultimate choice over their reproduction?that would be the morals and beliefs of those few who shape the discourse. Variance in religious belief and practise is great so why are a minority of people allowed to take up such a large space in the national discourse and to determine the ?religious perspective??
Freedom of religion is a beautiful thing. It allows people to retain their individual faiths without fearing oppression or discrimination by others because of their faith. But does that freedom of religion not extend to others as well? If you are a non-religious person, an agnostic, a Christian who believes people should have the choice about contraception and abortion but would not necessarily go down that road yourself, where is your freedom then? If one would listen to the debates in the current Republican presidential race, those rights do not exist. The argument is that what ought to exist instead are the morals and values ? the religion ? of a minority of white men. This has been illustrated by the push for defunding Planned Parenthood, the outrage over including free access to contraceptives in health plans and the obsession with outlawing abortion. These actions all amount to using the ?freedom of religion? argument to restrict people?s choices ? and gain political ground. The consequence would be a return to ?ye olden days? when women did not have a right to control their own reproductive systems, and their health would lie in the hands of others.
With the reported overwhelming majority of Catholic women using contraception, while their religious leaders and ?representatives? argue against access to said contraception on a religious basis, it is hardly seems fair. At least some arguments belonging to the abortion debate are more straightforward, focusing instead on the argument over where life begins. This argument is far more honest than one hiding behind the freedom of religion to restrict choices of all women about their reproductive health, when even the majority of those said to be outraged are making the same choices as those who are not.
So the question I want to ask is: at what point does the rhetoric of religious freedom become a rhetoric of religious oppression?
