Tiny Goals For Meaningful Results | Self Improvement Blogs from ...

I have always been ambivalent about requesting homework and reading in between treatment sessions. If you can do it, it is a great thing because it speeds up therapy and reduces the amount of sessions that you are probably likely to want. The trouble is that at times I feel just like assigning homework is like setting some people up for failure?.sort of?

I mean, you can?t truly fail in treatment. I am actually O.K if folk do not get the reading done because I will show you in the session how to do whatever it was I wanted you to read. That being said, it can still feel a bit like a little failure to the person coming to see me (although it truly, really is okay with me ? I get how busy folks are).

Life is brim-full of these little screw ups and they can get pretty tedious.

We all know we should work out?.but we do not.

We all know we should eat better?but we do not.

We know we should not wait till the last minute to do our taxes?.but we don't.

The list could go on.

The road to self-improvement seems to be covered over with all these shoulds and more things to add to an already hectic timetable. That disconnect between where you are and were you would like to be is a place that's often filled with a lot of discomfort and self-recrimination.

Instead of trying to work out how to be a more developed person, it can regularly be more helpful to think about what would make you a more happy person. Sounds more fun as well , does it not?

Take something stressful off your plate. Meet a chum for coffee (or call a pal if you are pushed for time). Hear a uplifting piece of music. Take 5 from the office and get some fresh air.

All of these small things truly add up and they are frequently the first thing many cognitive behaviour doctors will get you moving on because they make such a large impact in terms of your mood.

Stress about the bigger changes when you get your energy moving in the right direction. Nobody has every made any positive changes when they're fully drained, exhausted or are thrashing themselves up for not being able to do more.

Treat yourself with kindness, get some rest, have a chuckle and then you'll be in the right frame of mind to think up a plan which will really suit you instead of setting some unrealistic and almost impossible collection of targets that will cause you to feel worse off than before starting.
