JOB: Public Affairs Manager | NAPRCA | Public Relations Council of ...

BREWTON -?Georgia-Pacific, one of the world?s leading manufacturers of tissue, pulp, paper, packaging, building products and related chemicals, seeks a Public Affairs Manager.

This role will focus on using internal and external communications to increase mill long-term value and understanding of GP and the business. This includes a strong employee communications program and being a valuable information source to the mill leadership team and maintaining a positive relationship with the community and local media.
The Public Affairs Manager initially will spend approximately 60% of his/her time on internal communications work, 30% on public affairs work (community relations and government interaction) and 10% on proactive and reactive media relations.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and manage a comprehensive employee communications program at the mill, as well as internal communications support of critical mill and company initiatives, including use of best practices from public affairs and communications managers at other GP mills.
  • ?Establish strong relationships with community members including local government officials, regulatory agencies and community groups. Coordinate issues and activities with legal, government affairs and corporate communications.
  • Own local issues and coordinate activities with legal, government affairs and corporate communications.
  • Advise the mill management team of issues, attitudes and opinions both inside and outside the company that could affect mill operations. This includes establishing a climate of cooperation with employees and implementing or helping support necessary programs to maintain GP?s position as a leader in a highly competitive industry.
  • Establish and maintain the means to detect signals of company vulnerability in external and internal environments; develop communications plan for crisis and serve as a member of the crisis management team.
  • Tell the GP/business story through various outlets in the community.
  • Develop strong relationships with reporters and editors who cover the community and participate in the process of gathering and disseminating news. This includes serving as company spokesperson where appropriate and facilitating interviews by providing background, details and explanation.
  • Develop and implement programs and volunteer opportunities in support of the local community that are aligned with the focus areas around MBM Guiding Principles, and add long-term value to our business, community and customers.
